The UConn People Empowering People (PEP) Program is a dynamic personal, family, and civic leadership development initiative with a strong focus on community engagement and empowerment. There are two versions of the UConn PEP program.
PEP Communities Program
The UConn PEP Communities Program is designed for adults and older teens. It builds on the unique strengths and life experiences of each participant, emphasizing the powerful connection between personal growth and community action.
This program is offered in a variety of settings across Connecticut, including schools, family resource centers, community organizations, and faith-based institutions.
PEP at Correctional Institutions (PEPCI)
For more than 25 years, UConn Extension has partnered with the Department of Correction to provide the UConn PEP at Correctional Institutions (PEP CI) Program to their inmates. Modeled after the community-based PEP program, PEP CI focuses on personal and family leadership development with the goal of reducing recidivism.
The program encourages participants to reflect on their lives, recognize their strengths, and take responsibility for their future. Through the support of dedicated volunteers, PEP CI fosters empowerment and the development of skills that support successful reintegration into society.
Why PEP Matters
The UConn People Empowering People Program is more than a leadership course—it’s a catalyst for personal transformation and community change. Participants gain confidence, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of how their community functions. Through the active development and participation in community projects, they make a difference in their families, neighborhoods, and beyond.
